IATA releases Contactless Travel Guide to help expand the use of contactless travel solutions.

News Agencies: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has issued a Contactless Travel Guide to help expand the use of contactless travel solutions and accelerate their adoption. The guide will provide a matchmaking service to assist airlines in identifying and implementing contactless travel at specific airports, including in partnership with other airlines.

IATA stated that contactless travel uses compatible biometric solutions, enabling passengers to complete travel procedures without the need for physical documents such as passports or boarding passes. The association emphasized that contactless solutions can enhance efficiency in various aspects of travel, including:

  • Baggage drop-off
  • Lounge access
  • Security screening
  • Boarding

Key Features of the Contactless Travel Guide:

  1. A single reference pointfor airlines to identify the availability of biometric touchpoints across their network.
  2. Traveler eligibility informationby location, allowing airlines to determine which passengers (based on nationality, passport compatibility, and age) qualify for contactless services using biometric identification.
  3. Technical protocolsthat airlines need to integrate with biometric touchpoints operated by other airlines or airports.

Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety, and Security, said:
“The release of the Contactless Travel Guide will make it easier for airlines to expand biometric services for their customers. As travelers increasingly seek greater efficiency, biometric recognition technology is playing a growing role in facilitating travel. This guide, along with IATA’s One ID initiative, aims to accelerate this transformation through critical data and global standards.”

Demonstration at Passenger Terminal Expo

IATA noted that Airware, a digital services provider, along with identity management companies IDEMIA and iPassport, will be the first to showcase the guide’s application at this year’s Passenger Terminal Expo in Madrid. Attendees will be able to register for a mock flight between the UK and Spain using the WorldJet Airline app, then pass through biometric checkpoints at the Airware and IDEMIA booths—simulating a real airport experience.
