Nestled within the Dana Biosphere Reserve, Rummana Camp is enveloped by forests of cypress, pine, and juniper trees, adorned with a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers and aromatic shrubs like wormwood and sage. As tranquility reigns over this ecologically diverse sanctuary, the camp heralds the beginning of the tourist season in the region.
Perched overlooking the village of Dana and its rose-hued valleys and mountains, Rummana Camp opens its doors to local and international visitors at the onset of spring, welcoming up to 135 guests daily.
Raed Al-Khawaldeh, Director of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, explained that the camp offers a variety of eco-tourism activities, most notably guided tours along scenic trails that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the serene spring ambiance of Wadi Dana and Rummana Camp, now lush with greenery, wildflowers, and golden spikes.
He added that the camp’s establishment reflects the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature’s (RSCN) sustainable ecotourism initiatives, designed to utilize available resources responsibly. The project prioritizes local visitors, offering them a recreational retreat into pristine natural landscapes untouched by ecological disruption.
To preserve the area’s natural integrity, the reserve management has set a visitor capacity limit—60 guests for overnight stays and 75 for day visits—and designated several trails to explore the hidden wonders of Rummana Camp.
Al-Khawaldeh noted that the camp embodies the reserve’s commitment to eco-tourism, serving as a hub for conservation-based projects that leverage environmental resources while safeguarding them from exploitation. Solar energy was integrated into the camp’s lighting system years ago, furthering its sustainability.
Visitors to Rummana Camp can witness Jordan’s last and largest known natural cypress forest, home to 833 plant species—three of which were first recorded in modern scientific history as native to Dana.
The camp features 30 fully equipped tourist tents and a traditional Bedouin-style hair tent, offering guests authentic local cuisine and all necessary lodging amenities.
