Madaba

Madaba is a combination of rural home life and a hot spot for religious tourism. Known as the “City of Mosaics”, Madaba is the cultural epicenter for Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. Brief history

Madaba is well known at its Mosaics which are scattered, since 5th century, throughout its churches and homes. Do you want to know why is it a masterpiece? Let us talk about the church which was built over the remains of the Byzantine church since the 6th century, it is called Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. The finest mosaic found to date is still in its original place there. What is fascinating about Madaba, it is predicted that many more hidden masterpieces waiting to be discovered. Riffing on St. George Church details, the church itself looks magical.

One of the weird and interesting incidents, what happens to the St. George Church, Madaba, Jordan when it was burned before 53 years. There was a drawing for the Virgin Mary that contains her, carrying the baby Jesus with her two hands. Surprisingly, when the fire happened a third hand appeared which indicates that because of her mercy, the church has been saved from burning.

Madaba It is the main city of the governorate of the same name. It is part of the Jordanian Highlands (altitude of 760 masl), but in this case it is very close to Amman: it is only 40 km from the capital, which makes it very accessible by road. It has a population of just over 120,000, which places it among the 10 most populous cities in Jordan

Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration

The Institute of Mosaic Art and Restoration was founded in 1992 as the Madaba Mosaic School, and funded by the Italian government. It was a high school which offered the Tawjihi, the Jordanian equivalent of a high school diploma. In 2007, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, under the Department of Antiquities, partnered with USAID’s Siyaha tourism development project, and the Italian government to launch the institute as a two-year, post-secondary educational program. The institute offers diplomas in Mosaic Art Production and Restoration. The institute is located between the Madaba Visitors Center and the Madaba Archaeological Park
